Hi Oreia..glad you could! 🙂 Is that your language?

I just recently was given a Hilary Stagg CD and I cannot tell you how relaxing it has been for me. When I am stressed, his music soothes and takes the cares and fears from me. I know nothing of Hilary Stagg but I did read that he died. What was the cause of his demise? I have looked for a Biography but can’t seem to find one. What a pity, such talent lost.

  4. on 16/08/2008 at 09:57 Nikita

Hi Madison, I do agree with you. His music is so relaxing and music I really enjoy when listening! Unfortunately, I don’t know what was the cause of his death. I will try and find out today via a search on the net and if I find something, I will add it to the post. Thanks for visiting and feel welcome to come back!

THIS GUY IS MY HERO!! I have ALL his CD’s!!

If I feel stressed and at breaking point, al I do is pop in one of his CDs and let him move me to a better state of mind.

Seriously, Hilary Stagg moves me, my mind and soul like no other music can!

I discovered one of his songs (new beginnings) by accident, and it did something to me that I can not explain… have you ever seen a grown mans’ eyes swim in tears, but good tears? – Well that’s what Hilary Stagg’s music does to me…

He is (was) a genius!! Unfortunately he is no longer with us!

I was so impressed by his music that I “googled” it – He was an electrician by trade and he taught himself how to play the harp as a hobby.

He actually modified his electrical harps himself to get that “Hilary Stagg” sound!

He died unexpectedly in 1999 after illness.

…I found one of the page again…most of the important info is there!

PS: I would love to see his DVD but no luck here in SA shops!

    hello AndreR!
Thanks for your visit and welcome to my blog! You reminded me now about a little program, Audacity, which I’ve got now to upload snippets of music. I’ve got the album and I think i will create an entry soon with some of his music. Thank you for the link! I do appreciate it. I do agree with you…his music is really doing something for the listener. Sad that he’s no longer with us, as his music is so beautiful!
I hope you will find the DVD in some way…I’ve heard that Amazon doesn’t want to deliver items anymore in SA due to “you know what”…so sad for Saffas to not be able to order via Amazon items from abroad anymore.

  7. on 05/10/2008 at 23:45 AndréR

    Hi Nikita,

Yes, it’s true…Amazon AND most of eBay does not ship to SA anymore because the order (CD, DVD) goes LOST!!

There are three videos on YouTube but I don’t think it is the “real thing” – just a photo to music!?

I found the other site with more info on Hilary Stagg: whyfame.com/celebrities/singers/world_reggae/hilary_stagg_6337.php

  8. on 06/10/2008 at 07:38 Nikita

    Hi AndreR
That’s sad to know about eBay too…thanks again for the link!
I also found 2 other links on my blog with music of Hilary! I thought I blogged more of his music, but had to find the links first.. enjoy! 🙂 The links are now in the post…

Hilary Stagg one of the great harp plays and his music is so peaceful.
I did get to meet him one, and I have all his music.

      hi Nara
Welcome to my blog. You were so lucky to meet Hilary! I love his music and it’s sad that he’s not with us anymore.

I just now heard about Hilary Stag I am completly amazed by his music. What also amazes me is he quit his job, just to pursue his dream, and love for the harp, and it’s music. Finally a person I can completly admire. It was such a shame he passed so suddly from this world.

  11. on 08/01/2010 at 15:10 Nikita

Hi Julie! Welcome to my blog. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a message. It is like you said, very sad that he passed away, his music is absolute beautiful. I’m glad that you discovered it and also enjoy his music.

I’ve been listening to Hilary’s music since his first cd came out. An interesting note: I too believe in lucid dreaming because i have experienced it. At night I set my dvr/tv to the “new age” music channel for an hour and i fall asleep before the timer turns the tv off. Very frequently, I awake at the start of Hilary’s “Thinking of You” mmm, and that always happens when I feel lonely or kinda down. Strange isn’t it? I absolutely love him.

  13. on 10/01/2010 at 09:39 Nikita

Hi Rebecca! Welcome and nice of you leaving me a message…I only discovered Hilary’s music a few years ago – through a friend, so really know his music! His music is great to listen to when you’re alone, as there is something to it that put you in a good spirit.

  14. on 30/05/2010 at 00:44 k. t. stanton

Did you know that Hilary’s dad was a chess champion? I hope his music continues to be spread around the world….

  15. on 30/05/2010 at 01:22 Nikita

hi K T Stanton, Welcome to my blog! That is great news. I searched for a chess player with the surname Stagg…you don’t know his first name? I’ve found Ralph Stagg…but not sure if that is his dad. Thanks for the info and stopping by.

About ten years ago, I used to listen to a classical music station on the FM dial which played classical guitar segment in the a.m. hours. After the segment, I continued listening to the station, when lo, and behold! This angelic music from a harp started playing! It was then I was captured by the music of Hilary Stagg. The instrumental was his romantically angelic piece, “Prelude To Love”. His music has such a calming effect, doesn’t it? 🙂

  17. on 20/07/2010 at 20:49 Nikita

hi Beverly, Welcome to my blog and I’m glad that you discovered his music too! I discovered it much later than I should have lol…but still in time to enjoy many years of it. His music does have a calming effect, I do agree with you.

    hello,
my husband and i were vacationing in laguna in 1990. we stopped in an ale house to catch our breath and sitting next to us was a friendly young man with a beautiful smile. he told us about his “new type” of music., and asked us if we wanted to hear it. we accompanied him to his car. we listened, loved, and bought his cd. FROM HIS CAR! we had no clue hilary died. we are so saddened but feel most truly blessed to have met a special angel! Barbara

  19. on 20/09/2010 at 20:09 Nikita

    hi Barbara

You were lucky! It’s unbelievable things like this happened. I believe he must have been a special person.

  20. on 21/09/2010 at 11:36 bill

Why is it so difficult to get a biography on Hilary Stagg?

    • on 19/03/2012 at 00:05 GCG

I agree! I read his wife is very shy but is in charge of his estate and music copyrights. She really needs to come out of her shell. Hillary was human to her in all his defects and virtues ,but to us he will keep inspiring our souls so great for generations!!! Where are you wife? Talk to us!!!!!

  21. on 21/09/2010 at 17:27 Nikita

    hi Bill
That is a good question. I myself couldn’t find that much information about him.

  22. on 19/03/2012 at 00:00 GCG

The music of this man is amazing! I credit him greatly in healing me from stage 4 cancer! I was learning Buddhist meditation at the time and his music was able to relax me to a level where I reached very high levels of consciousness and tapped into the healing powers of your soul energy! He is a hero of mine as is Paramahansa Yogananda-as I could have not done without them and the faith –in God!. A true loss and an amazing man who still inspires and heals after he has departed! No one like him!

I am Hilary Stagg’s niece. I want to thank everyone for such kind words about my uncle, and how he has touched so many lives. I remember fondly him playing me to sleep on a peaceful summer’s day at his home in Grass Valley. We miss him terribly.
As a family, we had decided not to reveal his cause of death. We feel it is unimportant. the most important thing is his music live on. Thank you.

    -Gina
PS. my grandpa Ralph Was indeed a chess champion 🙂 I wish I could have known him.

    • on 31/03/2012 at 12:21 Nikita

      hi Gina!
Welcome to my blog and thank you for taking time to stop and share with us about Hilary. He is definitely a great loss to music and we all will continue enjoying his fantastic compositions.

Such a powerful musician. His music will live on forever for many of us. I can remember at many times of need his music soothed our souls. So sorry for your loss. Jeanne.

I am one of Hilary’s sisters. He and I were in concert band together in Junior High School. He was quite a good sousaphone player and could sight-read very well. Several times at band festivals and competitions, other groups who were missing their sousaphone player due to illness or unplanned absence, would “borrow” Hilary to play in their place. I always have loved this about him. I have many friends who played Hilary’s music while they were pregnant and, lo and behold, once their child was born, would instantly calm down at the sound of the music.

We do miss him; his sense of humor and his hug (he had a very nice hug) 🙂

    • on 25/02/2013 at 21:00 Nikita

      Hi Karen!
Welcome to my blog and thank you so much for this piece of ‘personal’ information about Hilary. I can imagine how much you as a family must miss him, for being a family member, but also as a musician. Sweet memories you have of him!

    • on 14/01/2019 at 23:57 Nadine Terman

Karen, I am trying to find printed sheet music so that I can arrange a duet (harp and piano) with my son who loves Hilary’s songs. I cannot find any place that prints the notes of his music. Do you know where i can get it? A loving mom…

    • on 18/01/2019 at 22:22 Nikita

Hi Nadia, I am not sure if Karen will come back here to reply. I don’t have her email to let her know either. 🙂

You may enjoy the lovelyy wild birds slideshow we put together using Hilary’s Sweet Return. The song fit so perfectly with the serenity of the photos. It’s viewable on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB2I-sxCJYc.

I discovered Hilary’s music at a stay in the Banyan Tree hotel in Phuket in 2001 where they had his music playing in the room on arrival. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I have never found anything that has the same effect on me since then and regularly listen to his music over a decade later. It is very generous of Gina and Karen to share personal memories of Hilary with us. It is a shame that there is no written or recorded interview with Hilary in which he could share with us the inspiration behind his music.

  27. on 13/04/2015 at 04:11 Tom

Hilary was a friend of mine. His death was not because of his illness (he had a bad flu) it was because of a prescription medicine that has since been taken off the market. Hilary got up in the middle of the night, the medicine had destroyed his ability to maintain his balance, he fell and hit his head. Listening to his amazing music is indeed comforting and bittersweet.

I have always loved Hilary’s music and just now found out that he had died. Wow. I played his music constantly at my massage school for over 10 years. Now I play it when I do massages. He lives on thru his music.

In the mid 1990’s I worked in a garden shop that played all sorts of music over the sound system for customers and employee’s benefits. One day this wonderful harp music came over the speakers. I was enthralled. Quickly found out who the artist was and even more quickly, purchased a cassette (it was the mid 90’s! LOL!) Eventually replaced them with CD’s and still enjoy the wonderfully soothing melodies of Hilary Stagg. I, just recently, in 2017 found out that Hilary had died in 1999 of, what I was told, was an AIDS related illness. I felt almost as though I had lost someone I personally knew. What a tragedy, but his music will live on and on bringing peace and contentment to all who listen.
