Wartime Recipes

03/10/2008 by Nikita

I was given this book quite a time ago and it was also one of the …27 drafts! on my blog…so 26 more to go! Sometimes, when I want to blog about something…but later… you know sometimes you want to do something…but then you say in your head…”later”…not now…ok, now you know what I’m talking about…Langenhoven – a wise “King Solomon” of South Africa…(see some of his quotes on the side bar of my blog)…used to say…and I translate…”the lazy person/sluggard’s day of work is ‘tomorrow’ “ – (Die luiaard se werksdag is “môre”!)..That means…I was too lazy to blog it immediately…lol! not really, I was only busy with something I found more enjoyable/interesting to blog…I usually save stuff on draft and there it waits…for one rainy day! So, having some rainy weather here now…also some quite cold weather, much colder than last week…here’s today’s draft no 12 for you…. A collection of recipes from WWII. I’ve thought to share a few recipes from this cute little book! I do hope you find it “interesting” too! Click and zoom in on the images to have a larger view and print them off!

Nee o aarde ek weet darem nie of ek Skaap harte sal eet nie, oorlog of nie! 😆

Nikita ek het ook so vreeslike ou resepte boek van my ouma, ek is baie heilig oor hom. Die blaaie is al lelik en stukkend. Opgebruik!
Ek dink ek moet hom bietjie gaan uitgrou!

what on earth were people saying on the first few posts

    hi candypup
Welcome to my blog. It is my mother tongue! Afrikaans is a language, the youngest language in the world. Afrikaans developed from the Dutch language and it is very similar to the Flemish Language too. I’m quite sure you are familiar with languages of the world, you may want to read more about the Afrikaans language – or even the Dutch language – all Germanic languages — have a look at this link…

Truly enjoyed looking through your recipes and other information. Lived here in USA for forty years and still
long for some good old SA dishes. I do have several
cook books but the family don’t seem to enjoy the
dishes and deserts I grew up with. I am going to try the
“pap tert”, that sounds great. Keep up the good work and
hopefully I’ll be back in South Africa for a long visit in 2012.

    Groete

hi Gael, Welcome to my blog! [Welkom hier op my blog]. I’m glad you enjoyed what you found here. Pity your family doesn’t enjoy the dishes as much as you wanted. The “pap tert” is really delicious. Enjoy your visit to SA in 2012! Groete aan jou ook!

  • Spoken by great men:"Give me 20 divisions of American soldiers and I will breach Europe. Give me 15 consisting of Englishmen and I will advance to the borders of Berlin. Give me two divisions of those marvellous fighting Boers and I will remove Germany from the face of the earth." - Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery, Commander of the Allied Forces during WW2.

  • "The Americans fight for a free world, the English mostly for honour, glory and medals, the French and Canadians decide too late that they have to participate. The Italians are too scared to fight, the Russians have no choice. The Germans for their Fatherland. The Boers? Those sons of Bitches fight for the hell of it." American General, George 'Guts and Glory' Patton.
