I won’t give up!

11/04/2008 by Nikita

This is Steve Hofmeyr’s version: https://chessaleeinlondon.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/steve-hofmeyr-i-wont-give-up.mp3

Update: 22/04/2012
Listen to Bruce’s version: http://ubuntu.primaryblogger.co.uk/files/2012/07/Bruce_Millar_I_WONT_GIVE_UP_.mp3

Update October 2011

If you are interested in emailing/contacting Bruce Millar – see his message in the comments box. Here is also an email that was left by ‘Natasha Millar’ – assume it is his wife? – or relative – see the comments box. millar@vanilla.co.za

This song is one of my favourites on a Steve Hofmeyr CD…this song was sung by Bruce Millar first before Steve recorded it too. Bruce is a great artist and was born in Zimbabwe…you can read more about Bruce on this link. He’s now a radio presenter in South Africa. What I didn’t know and only discovered recently, was that his song is a translation of this Italian song, Inno, sung by Mia Martini. I could find the Italian song on youtube and you can follow the words in English. I’ve got the words in Italian too and if you understand Italian, you might want to tell me – when comparing the words to the English song – if it’s a true translation… thanks!

English words:
I won’t give up

I won’t give up my dream
There’s a love for me
Somewhere in this world of loneliness
Someone who’s cup is filled with tears
And waiting like me
To share that sweet embrace
And chase away the saddened face
Of yesterday’s fears.

I won’t give up the search
‘Till I find the one
Who’s kisses will awake my heart
And make it fly
I won’t give up
I’m gonna take my stand
Because I know
There’s someone in this world
That won’t give up
‘Till she’s holding my hand
Repeat song twice

Sole no! Non puoi – piu’ mandarci via
Rosso stai salendo sempre piu’
Lui sta dormendo il mare sa’ – quanto amore
Mi ha dato e mi dara’ rubando il viso di una sera

At last! Bruce on Youtube too!

Hi Nikita Just happened upon your comments about me, and thought I would drop you a line to thank you. It’s quite touching to come across someone who actually remembers me! By the way, if you’ll permit me, may I correct a few lines of I WONT GIVE UP. The first verse should read:
“I won’t give up my dream
    There’s a LOVE for me
Somewhere in this world of loneliness
Someone who’s cup is filled with tears
    And waiting like me
    To share that sweet EMBRACE
And chase away the SADDENED face
    Of yesterday’s fears.”
Perhaps as a result of your publishing my email address, I ocasionally get enquiries about how to get hold of a copy of my recording of the song. (I burn them a copy and post it off.)
I would love to know a little about you, if you have the time.
    Kindest regards
    Bruce

      Morning Bruce:

My goodness. It is Sunday midday and your song was played over 702. I won’t give up. I am now 51. It brought back a flood of memories of yesteryear. Made me very mellow and emotional.

I see you are giving out copies of this song. Do you perhaps have it on an MP3 file? If not, how do I go about getting a “hard” copy of it?

If there is any cost associated with this, please let me know and how I could pay it, preferably electronically.

      Regards
      Joe

Oh my goodness. I can’t believe that its possible that I can reply on a comment of the singer of my number 1 favourite song.

Yes I know it’s impossible to have a number 1 but I do and it is I won’t give up.

I used to sneak around and steal my mom’s LP and play it all day.

Then make sure it’s packed away before she gets home.

And now hearing the song on Bay fm made me wonder if I still remember the words.

So I went and googled it and came accross this. Its amazing

I am now 31 and I still LOVE this song as if I wrote it myself.

If you do read this and have facebook would you please invite me.
      Wilandi Oosthuizen
      It would mean a lot.
      Thank you

      Hi Wilandi!
Welcome to my blog and thanks for stopping by. I’m not sure if Bruce will come here – again – but if he does, I hope he will read your message – and invite you on FB 😉
      Good luck!
Bruce’s email details was left here too, I hope you’ve seen it – you could email him straight away and ask him to contact you on FB, instead of waiting here for once in a blue moon INCASE Bruce might be coming here – again. 🙂

  5. on 25/11/2008 at 17:58 Kev Trigg

One of my all time favourites, although I was only about 4 years old at the time when it was released! lol
If I recall correctly, my parents had it on a 7-single and used to play it quite a lot. (Remember those 7-single thingys??)
Would be great to get a copy of it! Any ideas where I can get it?
    Kev

  6. on 25/11/2008 at 18:20 Nikita

    hi Kev,

I have the song on a cd, but it’s Steve Hofmeyr singing it… and here’s Bruce’s email if you want to contact him yourself…read his message here too…the first one… maybe you’re lucky!! millarb(at)afm.co.za…good luck and let me know if you got your copy!!

  7. on 28/11/2008 at 17:17 Kev Trigg

    Hi Nikita,

Thanks for your response.. I also have the Steve Hofmeyr version, but to be honest, he just doesn’t do the song ‘justice’ the way that Bruce did!
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Steve’s music. One of my favourites of his was on his first album ‘Desertbound’.. ‘7 Steelway’!
Also, thanks for the email address.. I’ll try it and let you know.
    Take care..

    Kev

    LOCAL IS LEKKER!! lol

    🙂

  8. on 28/11/2008 at 18:10 Nikita

hi Kev! That’s a pleasure. I agree that there’s only one person to sing that song and that’s Bruce himself. Ja, local is altyd lekkerder! 🙂 Please do let me know as I would want to have that song from Bruce himself too!

  9. on 04/02/2009 at 07:46 Russell

I heard the song last night again after many, many years; having last heard it when I was a little boy. I remembered the tune but was too young to remember all the words and decided to search quickly for the words on the net this morning.

Listening to the song brought back an overwhelming rush of memories; a truely beautiful song indeed…

  10. on 04/02/2009 at 09:01 Nikita

hi Russell! Welcome to my blog. Yes, this song is beautiful. I’ve uploaded Steve’s version now as the video-link here doesn’t work anymore. 😦

  11. on 04/02/2009 at 13:13 Russell

    Hi Nikita,

Thank you for your welcome, that was very sweet of you. 🙂

I have just listened to the Steve’s version but I still think that I prefer the Bruce Millar version, though let me be quick to point out that Steve is himself extremely talented.

    Take care
    Russell

  12. on 04/02/2009 at 14:45 Nikita

    hi Russell

Yes, I agree with you completely. Bruce’s version is much better, but unfortunately, i don’t have it! 😦

yes, I also agree with what you say on Steve. His one of my SA Favourites! You take care too!

  13. on 14/02/2010 at 19:09 carolien

the lyrics of “i wont give up” inspired me for a school project.
but man was it hard to find.

  14. on 14/02/2010 at 22:37 Nikita

hi Carolien, I’m glad I could help you, good luck with the project. 🙂

  15. on 23/04/2010 at 01:27 Edwin

Yes, what a lovely song. A tune that can never be forgotten. I tried to drop an email to Bruce, but received a delivery status notification (failure). Obviously his email address is no longer the same. Any idea how he can be contacted?

@Kev Trigg. Did you manage to get a hold of a copy of his song?

  16. on 23/04/2010 at 06:53 Nikita

hi Edwin, Welcome to my blog. Why don’t you try the telephone number? (in one of my replies) or SAfm – directly and ask staff there to direct you to him. I have no other option/idea, sorry! Good luck, hope you get hold of him. I don’t know if Keg Trigg will come back here to read again.

  17. on 23/04/2010 at 09:51 Edwin

Nikita, thanks for the quick reply. I will try and get a hold of him with the number you provided. I checked out SAFM’s website, and I found the same contact number for him there. I will post back my progress.

  18. on 23/04/2010 at 10:07 Edwin

Okay, I tried phoning that number (011) 714 2763 and it just rang, no answer. I will keep trying for the next few days until somebody answers 🙂

  19. on 23/04/2010 at 19:42 Nikita

Hi Edwin! Keep going! 🙂 Did you get any response…by now…what about dropping SAfm an email?
